I come from a long line of people who work very hard to make ends meet. My childhood memories are filled with family members who loved me very much, and were also very diligent to their jobs. Needless to say, having a job has always been an important part of my life, be it babysitting jobs starting at age ten, to lumber mill work during my high school summer days. Being the first in my immediate family to go to college, and knowing I would have to provide my own income in order to stay in school, Corvallis loomed ahead seeming exciting but very uncertain. Coming to Oregon State, I was unsure of how to support my financial needs. I desired a job opportunity that could provide me with plenty of hours so that I could make rent, but that was flexible enough to cater to my hectic school schedule.
The Memorial Union provided me with this opportunity. In fact, out of all the descriptive terms that encompass the spirit of the MU, the expression that stands out most of all to me is opportunity. Through my work experience the door of opportunity has been opened for me to make the most of myself. I’ve met life long friends, and excelled in my job, which has allowed me to excel in other areas of my life. I’ve noticed my leadership skills blossom, my priorities fall in line, and my time management skills increase immensely.
The opportunity to work at the MU brings a steady, yet flexible job experience for all employees. It is wonderful to be provided with a secure monthly income, and still be able to balance school, homework time, and everything else that keeps college students busy. The MU also brings opportunities for employees to move up in job responsibilities and pay brackets. I’ve held the responsibility of scheduling, stocking, and even giving interviews for other potential student workers and managers. This gives myself and other students the opportunity to create an outstanding resume with can be brought into future career prospects.
Aside from student workers, others can also feel the spirit of opportunity just by walking in the doors of the Memorial Union. There are opportunities for student involvement, opportunities for guests to learn more about Oregon State University, and even the opportunity just to grab a bite to eat and sit in the blissfully quiet study areas provided.
The Memorial Union has given me so much opportunity, starting with a fantastic job in which I feel secure and respected. For myself and others the MU provides endless opportunities to grow study, work hard, and find belonging. Oregon State can be a huge, intimidating place, and the MU is a key opportunity to find security within our college world. The spirit of the MU is always fresh and exciting and boasts opportunity of every shape and size. |
