Spirit of the MUby Beth Davis

I can remember walking up to the Memorial Union the first time I stepped foot on campus as an OSU student. As a transfer student to Oregon State University, I immediately compared everything to where I was before. MU looked huge; a little intimidating from what I had experienced before. But the moment I walked in, I knew I was at a school that had a great deal of pride in what they offered students and staff. From the atmosphere and people around, I knew Oregon State was where I was supposed to be.

I went into Javastop for my caffeine addiction and was immediately greeted by a friendly staff. Having previous work experience with coffee and needing a job, Javastop was where I was determined to be, and it worked out! I was excited to meet new people and work in a central location where there would be a lot of students, staff and visitors. Since becoming a Beaver last spring, I have been in the MU almost every day whether I am going to work or not. It’s a great place to do homework or meet up with friends and it has been a great place to network and connect. MU student employees hang out together when they aren’t on the clock or go in to visit those who are. I think this really shows the welcoming environment of the MU.

The Memorial Union building is filled with people and symbols that really represent what OSU is all about. We are an open-minded school that embraces diversity. The flags hanging around the Union represent many countries around the world. They are a great way to acknowledge and to let all students and visitors know about our welcoming atmosphere and attitude. Not only are the flags a great decoration, they are more importantly symbols of the many exchange students OSU has been home to and let’s us know how connected our world is.

Dedication to academics can be seen by the large number of students who take advantage of the great atmosphere of MU to study. Some prefer to carve out their own personal study space while others find the relaxed atmosphere perfect for group work. It’s also not unusual to see people relaxing, listening to music and visiting. It’s a great place to take a break from the routine of class or work! The guest speakers, musicians, and other events held in the MU are not only fun but allow for great learning to occur beyond the classroom.

The MU’s central location provides a meeting spot and is a place where staff, students and visitors can feel comfortable and welcome. A stop at Memorial Union is a great way to begin and end a great day at Oregon State University.
