Mission Statement
The mission of the Memorial Union Craft Center is to support and promote a creative outlet of expression for students and the other members of the University community by providing a dynamic environment, resources and arts programs in which people can foster their own creativity.

History
The Craft Center began in the nearly 1970’s with a handful of students in a small basement room off the MU Ballroom; jewelry & lapidary were popular crafts at this time. The Craft Centers popularity prompted an expansion and move to a new location in the MU East/Snell Hall in 1977; increasing it square footage to 4,600 square feet of space. Many new programs were offered; most popular was the addition of ceramics and photography. Yet another expansion occurred in 1996, occupying what had been The Gallery, a former eatery, into what we refer to as our South Classroom.

Today, the Craft Center comprises 7000 square feet of artist studio space, offering programs in: ceramics, black & white and digital photography, textiles (weaving, sewing & spinning), silk screening glass, flameworking, jewelry & metal work, woodworking and matting area. We are open 7 days a week, offering over 2,500 hours of formal classes and workshops per year. In addition, the Craft Center offers 57 hours open studio time per week to its members.

I am a ceramic artist in Corvallis, Oregon. My work is exhibited in local galleries, coffee shops and art centers in Oregon. I teach art classes to children as well as adults through after school programs at the Art Center and through the OSU Craft Center. Clay calms my mind and I find it a very satisfying form of artistic expression!

I have been throwing pots for about 13 years and teaching at the craft center for 7 years. The type of pots I tend to be drawn to are definitely functional pots. In general, I am a minimalist by nature, so it only makes sense that I like to make pots that have a purpose and work well for that purpose. I'm fascinated by the little things that make a pot not only look good, but feel good to the touch and of course how they function for the user! In my classes, I try to utilize visual drawings on the white board, I provide hand outs, and do many demonstrations in order to connect with each students learning style. The lessons tend to be very process oriented and try to build a strong foundation of skills so that the students can develop solid throwing skills.

I learned to sew from my mother when I was in third grade. I received her Bachelors in Home Economics Education and my MAIS in Museum Studies from OSU. Currently, I’m involved in the Corvallis Fiber Arts Guild, Columbia Basket Guild, and Oregon Glass Guild, as well as volunteering. I love working with my hands and sharing art ideas, and think working at the MUCC is the most wonderful place to do both!

Teaching at the Craft Center gives me the opportunity to share my love to create things with others.  Whether it's spinning at my wheel or designing a wedding dress for someone, I get to express myself through my work.  I enjoy teaching others how to do the same and I share a bit of who I am in the process.

Over the last decade I have worked with glass using a variety of techniques, essentially trying to ‘capture a moment’ during its fluidic phase. I often incorporate pieces into larger and more diverse works. After arriving in Corvallis I was pleased to discover the OSU Craft Center. It has been an excellent resource which has allowed me the opportunity to refine, practice and elevate my artistic skill set.
