THE UNIVERSITY THEATRE:
A RETROSPECTIVE 1895-2007
June 15 to August 30, 2007
Curators: Charlotte Headrick , Barbara Mason, & George Caldwell
Theatre activity has been part of Oregon State University since its founding. As early as 1866, “Elocution” was listed as part of the curriculum at Oregon Agricultural College. In the early days, there was a student society dedicated to debate, and drama, and declamation/rhetoric.
Not only are items from the University Theatre collections on display in this exhibit including posters, costumes, properties, scenery, lighting instruments, and photographs, but also photographs and memorabilia from the Oregon State University archives. Historic garments from Design and Human Environment were lent back to the University Theatre, items that were donated to DHE from the theatre’s collection in the early 1980s.
The earliest photograph in the exhibit is from a production of Julius Caesar from circa 1895 which was staged at the Corvallis Opera House. In addition to the outdoor Shakespeare productions in the 1920s, we know that the University Theatre produced plays in Benton Hall and then in the late 1930s until the late 1940s productions were staged at the Majestic Theatre. The University Theatre moved into the College Playhouse in 1951, later named the Mitchell Playhouse (now the Valley Gymnastic Facility) and was at that location until the fire marshal shut the building down as a theatre. In 1991, the University Theatre moved into its new space in Withycombe Hall, site of the old OSU dairy. During the 1990-1991 season, the University Theatre was on the road and three productions were mounted at the Majestic Theatre, bringing it back to some of its early roots in Corvallis.
.
From 1993-2007, the University Theatre has produced sixteen plays by Shakespeare. No other college or university in the state nor in the region can match this record.
The University Theatre will present the Second Annual Bard in the Quad producing Much Ado About Nothing July 25-29, August 1-5 at 7:00 p.m. The University Theatre and the Department of Music will present H.M.S. Pinafore August 16-18 at 7:30, August 19 at 2:00 and September 28 & 29 at 7:30 and September 30 at 2:00 p.m. on the Main Stage at Withycombe Hall. The 2006-2007 University Theatre Season will open with Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches followed by Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, and the World Premiere of the musical Spin by John Frohnmayer, based on his years as the director of the National Endowment for the Arts.
This exhibit was curated by Theatre faculty Charlotte Headrick, Barbara Mason, and George Caldwell with assistance from OSU archivist Larry Landis, Jim Folts (Department of Art),and Elaine Pedersen (Design and Human Environment in HHS). The exhibit was installed by Headrick, Caldwell, Mason, Marion Rossi, Kevin Walker, Kevin Taylor, Angie Weeks, Larry Landis, and Jennifer Mower (DHE), Additional thanks goes to Alex Wallace for the loan of renderings and photographs, and to Teresa Preddy and Rick Miller of the Valley Library.
