Art
This November through December 8, the OSU Concourse Gallery is filled with over 100 ceramic forms as the Willamette Ceramics Guild opens it exhibit, “Handmade in Oregon III,” featuring the works of 14 guild artists. Many of the artists showing their work are part of the 26th Annual OSU Holiday Marketplace on December 1 and 2 in the MU Ballroom of OSU.

Functional, exploratory, and sculptural ceramics on display range from large- scale raku vases flashed with color, and functional pottery - to hand-built wall pieces inspired by colorful children’s art. Inspired by nature, the sea, fire, the Oregon rains, and the possibilities of a malleable material such as clay, the artists –both handbuilders and wheel throwers –work with a large variety of clay types, glazes and firing techniques including low temperature pit firing, raku firing, mid and high temperature gas and electric firing, salt, soda and ash, and firing in wood-fired anagama kilns.

Participating artists include: Holly Dubrasich, Ted Ernst, Pat Berman, Steve Aulerich, Fay Jones Day, Anthony Gordon, Beth Norris, Gerry Brehm, Sandy Houtman, Lee Kitzman, Keith Moses, Sandy Segna, Ann Lahr and Jeff Gunn.
The exhibit is curated by Barbara Sobo Gast.

Established at the Corvallis Art Center over 40 years ago as the “Clay Clan” at the Corvallis Art Center, the established guild of ARTCentric (formerly the Corvallis Art Center) now includes a lively clan of 40 ceramic artists from mostly Linn and Benton Counties who support each other in ceramic endeavors, education and work to promote and support ceramic art in the Willamette Valley. Many of the members are involved with Oregon Crafted, local Open Studios, and have their own studios. Others work out of the LBCC Ceramics Studio and the OSU Craft Center. Though most of the members have employment outside of ceramics, many work professionally as artists and instructors within the community teaching ceramics at the OSU Craft Center, LBCC, the Benton Center and local middle and high schools.

Highly visible within the community, the WCG exhibits and sells their work at the Corvallis Fall Festival and the Spring Garden Festival. Their Empty Bowls sale helps raise funds for hunger relief in our area. Additionally, many of the group exhibit and sell their work in galleries and marketplaces locally and nationally.

Please join the artists for an opening reception set for November 17, from 5:30-7pm in the MU Concourse Gallery. For information about the Willamette Ceramics Guild, contact Membership Coordinator, Ted Ernst, 753-9557.

The OSU Concourse Gallery is open daily from 7:30am-11pm, and is handicap accessible. For more information about the gallery, contact Craft Center manager, Susan Bourque, (541) 737-6371.

These paintings are observations from various travels, changed, enhanced or muted to create an atmosphere all their own. Though most are direct from nature, these representations also attempt to allude to a psychological space as well. Attempting to explore the surface and depth of this subject matter, as well as alluding to the production of the landscape painting, and how it has transformed, adapted (and stayed the same) over the years.

Sources of Inspiration: Celebrating Diverse Views

Featured are the works of five artists: Kay Campbell, Claudia Cave, Yuji Hiratsuka, Chang-Ae Song and Anthony Weir, all affiliated with Oregon State University. These artists were invited to participate in an art exchange exhibit between OSU and Kaye Academic College in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Five works from each artist travelled and were exhibited in Israel this past January and February of 2006. These works along with additional works by some of the artists will be on exhibition at the Concourse Gallery through June 22, 2006.

The artists include Educators, Lecturers and Professional Staff. They are representative of the diverse community present at Oregon State University. Each artist brings with them unique experiences, social up-bringings, and a cultural heritage that have influenced them and molded them into the individuals they are today. In their artists’ statements, they often express how their background and experiences have influenced their art.. Stylistically, their work also exhibits the wide variety of techniques and mediums.

This exhibit was conceived by Dr. Rachel Kroupp, Art Educator, Professor and Gallery Curator at Kaye College in Beer-Sheva, Israel. She and Kent Sumner, Memorial Union Marketing and Assessment Director and former Gallery Director at OSU, were instrumental in taking Rachel’s vision and making it a reality. The two had previously collaborated on two other exhibits: Artists from Israel Observe the Negrev, and “What I Like To Do In My Spare Time”: The Leisure Time Activity Preferences of Children in The United States and Israel. Both of these professionals strongly believe in the power of art to transcend cultural differences and build bridges between communities. In the words of Mr. Sumner, “Art can be the gateway to understanding. In our diverse culture, it is more important than ever that we see clearly, hear acutely and feel sensitively traits that are no longer just desirable, but essential if we are to work together.” Dr. Kroupp states, “ We consider the cultural connection and friendships that exist between the two nations very important and hope that this exhibit will act as another foundation in the friendship between us. The acknowledgement, understanding and acceptance of others are human values that must be consciously nurtured”.

The Memorial Union has a long history of international exhibits and it is our hope that this exhibit will provide students an opportunity to experience different cultures and gain a better understanding of other nations and cultures through the medium of art.

The Beautiful Body

Willendorf"An art exhibit in honor of Women's History Month"

In this open exhibit, women affiliated with OSU, were asked to use their creativity to respond to these questions: Why is the female form such a popular image in art? What is it about the female body that is so beautiful? How is the body used as a form of expression. The exhibit contains visual, performance, written, two and three dimentional works.

Eight Immigrant Artists From Israel

"A Bridge of Friendship and Understanding"
An art exchange between Kaye College in Beer Sheva, Isreal and OSU in Corvallis, Oregon. Eight diverse artists from Israel exhibit their work in the Memorial Union's Concourse Gallery, while simultaneously five artists affiliated with OSU exhibit in Israel.

Foreword

Oregon State University is committed to creating an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, academic freedom, diversity, and personal empowerment. By creating a compelling learning experience it enables everyone to learn with and from each other. This experience celebrates knowledge; encourages personal growth and awareness; acknowledges the benefits of diverse experiences, world-views, learning styles, and values; and engenders personal and societal values that benefit the individual and society. Those of us involved in Student Affairs at OSU, realize that many wonderful learning opportunities occur outside of the classroom. We value and respect the individual and believe that sharing knowledge changes lives. Source of Inspiration: Art Exchange and Exhibition between OSU and Kaye College in Beer-Sheva, Israel provides an opportunity for the communities of both institutions to be empowered by the depth of our commonalties and strengthened by the affirmation of our individualities. The artwork of thirteen artists, each with their own unique experiences and background, will highlight the diverse communities present at both institutions. This exhibit hopes to build a bridge of understanding and appreciation of our cultures.

This work and collaboration it demonstrates is also further evidence of the breadth of our university’s mission and potential that the arts offer us to deepen our community’s understanding of the human experience. We hope you will appreciate the depth of commitment of the participating artists and that your own learning will be enriched by the messages these works convey.
